Fall in Love with 40mm (Like I Did)

After a few months of using this lens, I’ve finally come to realize—it’s exactly the lens I’ve been needing for my Sony A7C II. If you’ve noticed, many of my photos are taken head-on with straight, symmetrical compositions. When shooting with the Ricoh GR III and its 28mm lens, I often had to deal with noticeable distortion. This 40mm lens, it turns out, is the perfect solution.

To be honest, I’ve always dreamed of owning a Sony pancake lens for a full-frame camera. I truly believe that the lighter your gear, the more likely you are to carry it around—and that’s exactly why I’ve used the GR III so often. The Sony 40mm pancake lens for full-frame has been around for a while, but it received mixed reviews, which made me hesitant to get one.

Then came the time I had to switch cameras, and the A7C II became my top choice. I was drawn to a setup I saw—someone had an A7C II styled to look like a Leica Q, complete with a square lens hood and a 28mm focal length. Sony actually offers a 24mm pancake lens, which is close to that Leica Q look. I almost went with that, but since I already had the 28mm Ricoh GR III, I chose the 40mm instead for something different.

This week’s YouTube video is a photowalk using the 40mm lens—check it out to see the results!
