RAW vs SOOC: Misconceptions About Fujifilm’s Film Simulations
A few days ago, I came across a TikTok video featuring the Fujifilm XM5 camera. What caught my attention was how the video highlighted “RAW vs EDITED,” but the images shown had no difference between them. The creator added the context: “When they say they prefer RAW, but we shoot with Fujifilm.”
The caption also said, “No need to edit if you’re using Fujifilm.”
I agree that Fujifilm can produce images with character, thanks to its film simulations. And honestly, I’d love to try it out, especially since my dream camera right now is the X100VI 😎.
However, what I don’t agree with is the claim that Fujifilm RAW files already include film simulation adjustments. As far as I know, RAW files are unprocessed. RAW means raw, plain and simple.
I did leave a comment on their post, but the creator insisted that the RAW files they got already included the film simulation. They also mentioned it was just a “joke.” Maybe so, but it could be misleading to people who are new to photography. Since I’ve never used Fujifilm myself, I held back from further commenting.
Later on, I met up with a photographer friend of mine who has been using Fujifilm cameras for years. I showed them the video, and they said it was misleading because RAW files do not include film simulations. RAW files are always unprocessed.
Of course, there are no rules about how people create content, whether it’s serious or humorous. That’s every user’s right. However, spreading incorrect information—especially when not everyone knows the context—just for the sake of a joke doesn’t sit well with me.
The point:
RAW ≠ SOOC (Straight Out of Camera)
Happy shooting, friends!
